Samsung sold the most smartphones in the first quarter of 2021

During the first quarter of this year, Samsung has the most handset shipments worldwide. According to Strategy Analytics’ new survey, global smartphone shipments reached 340 million units in Q1 2021.

Shipments increased by 24% year over year (YoY), the fastest rate of growth since 2015. This may be attributed to a spike in remote working and online education, which has aided in the growth of mobile purchases. In Q1 2021, Samsung was the best-performing smartphone maker, with a 23 percent market share. Huawei failed to crack the top five global mobile shipments, with Oppo and Vivo finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

According to the new Strategy Analytics survey, Samsung remains the biggest mobile manufacturer, shipping 77 million units globally in the first quarter, up 32% year on year from 58 million units in Q1 2020. The recent inexpensive Galaxy A-series 4G and 5G tablets, as well as the previously introduced Samsung Galaxy S21 series, are credited with the rise in sales. Apple came in second with 57 million iPhones shipped worldwide, accounting for 17% of the total market.

According to the survey, Xiaomi saw an increase in global smartphone shipments in Q1 2021 and ranked third in terms of volume delivered. In Q1 2021, it delivered 49 million smartphones worldwide, increasing its market share to 15% from 10% a year earlier. This is thanks to the brand’s success in India and China, as well as its penetration into new markets such as Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

In Q1 2021, Huawei was not among the top five global smartphone shipments. With 11 percent market share each, Oppo and Vivo came in fourth and sixth, respectively. According to Strategy Analytics, Oppo shipped 38 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year, while Vivo shipped 37 million. Vivo made significant progress last year, growing by an impressive 85 percent year over year in Q1 2021.

In Q1 2021, the top five vendors had a total market share of 76 percent, up from 71 percent a year before. “The China smartphone industry had a sensational quarter led by 5G device success across different price tiers,” said Linda Sui, Senior Director, Strategy Analytics. In the first quarter of 2021, smartphone shipments in China increased by 35% year on year, reaching 94 million units. Chip shortages and supply-side pressures had no bearing on the top five brands in Q1, but they were and would be a challenge for smaller vendors in the coming quarters, in our opinion.”
